Edna Buchanan to Stay at the St. Francis Inn!

 Edna Buchanan, who will receive the 2012 Lifetime  Achievement Award from the Florida Heritage Book Festival this September, will be staying at the St. Francis Inn!  We are honored to be the hosts for this Pulitzer Prize-winning author and look forward to extending our hospitality to her.

Ms. Buchanan's writing career spans 40 years and includes newspapers, magazines, fiction, nonfiction, and short stories.

She joined the Miami Herald in 1970 and was the first woman in Florida assigned full-time to the police beat.  Her awards include:

The Society of Professional Journalists’ Green Eyeshade Award
The Paul Hansell Award for Distinguished Achievement in Florida Journalism
The Florida Bar Association Media Award
The American Bar Association Gavel Award
The David Brinkley Award from Barry University
The George Polk Award for Career Achievement in Journalism

In 1986 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for General News Reporting "for her versatile and consistently excellent police beat reporting.”

Edna has also written nine mystery novels featuring police reporter Britt Montero.  Her books have been published in England, Japan, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Poland, and other countries.

Lend Me A Tenor at The Limelight Theatre

Bring the family to see this play about a famed Italian tenor who passes out prior to his performance, the manager persuades his assistant, an aspiring tenor, to take his place. When Il Stupendo comes to, two Othellos are chasing lingerie-clad women and this classic farce is at its finest! Nature Movies at GTM Reserve

The GTM Research Reserve will present the nature movie "Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic?" at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at 500 Guana River Rd in Ponte Vedra. Bag It follows "everyman" Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. Friday is the Junior Kingfish Challenge, Tournament Registration and the Captain's Meeting.  The main Kingfish Challenge and Backwater Challenge take place on Saturday and Sunday.  There will also be a fish fry and awards on Sunday at the St. Augustine City Marina, 111 Avenida Menendez.  For more information and registration forms, call 904-824-8324.

Susan Strock Art Exhibit

See a new exhibit of paintings by Suzanne Strock at the Gallery of the Dow Museum of Historic Houses in St. Augustine. A student of the masters, Suzanne's work frequently captures natural light interacting with man made structures. Admission to the Gallery is free. The Gallery and Museum are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Sundays. Admission to the wonderful collection of vintage houses, including one once occupied by Napoleon Bonaparte's nephew, is $8.95 for adults; $7.95 for seniors and $6.95 for students. Admission is free for children under 6. On the first Monday of each month, admission to the museum is free for St. Johns County residents. The Dow Museum of Historic Houses is located at 140 Cordova Street.

St. Augustine Chef Appears on Tallahassee TV - Bistro de Leon's Chef Poinard

One of our favorite chefs - Chef Jean-Stephane Poinard - from one of our favorite St. Augustine restaurants - Bistro de Leon - appeared on the WCTV Good Morning Show in Tallahassee.  He prepared one of our favorites:  Pulled Pork Eggroll.  Yes, we've tried it and YES, it is delicious!

First Friday Art Walk

The latest exhibits, music, entertainment and refreshments at more than 20 St. Augustine art galleries. Old Town Trolleys offer free round-trips to the heart of the art district from the San Sebastian Winery, 157 King Street, or go on your own self-guided art walk. Some highlights for this art walk include the 2nd Anniversary of Plum Gallery, 9 Aviles Street featuring a toast and new contemporary art exhibits; new paintings by Claire Kendrick at Worley Faver Gallery, 11A Aviles Street; new offering and a new look (including a beautiful new storefront mosaic) at Amiro Art & Found, 9C Aviles Street; and the opening of Photographic Expressions, an exhibit of fine art photographs by Tom Tibbitts and Tom Brock at the Butterfield Garage Art Gallery, 137 King Street (meet the artists there on Sunday). Historic Weapons Demonstrations At Fort Matanzas

The 18th century Spanish fort that guarded the southern approach to St. Augustine. From 12:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., authentically clad re-enactors will demonstrate Spanish muskets and cannons. Admission is free including the ferry ride from Rattlesnake Island. Blue Lotus Belly Dancers at Villa Zorayda

Villa Zorayda proudly presents an evening of history and entertainment set in the Moorish Court when the Blue Lotus Bellydancers perform a unique fusion of dance in an exciting theatrical manner with beautiful costumes, enchanting music, and artistic skill - including an incredible sword-balancing dance. Beginning at 7:45 p.m., guests can take a state-of-the-art audio tour of the historic Villa and its impressive collection of art and antiques. Las Comedias at Spanish Bakery

At 8 p.m., gather under the trees at the Spanish Bakery, 42 St. George Street, in St. Augustine for laughs and great food as the St. George Players present Comedias., a series of short, entertaining and educational "interludes" written in the 16th century by Spanish playwright Lope de Rueda. Lavish tapestries and costuming add to the atmosphere of these timeless tales of star-crossed lovers, bad working conditions, thieves and trickery. Plus, the Spanish Bakery staff serves salsa, empanadas, soup and dessert throughout the performance. Rod Stewart and Bon Jovi Tribute

World-renowned entertainer Kenny Holliday presents his tribute to Rod Stewart and Bon Jovi at the Pioneer Barn and Fort Menendez, 259 San Marco Avenue in St. Augustine. The performance also features a CD Release Party for Kenny's newest CD - only $5 each, a portion of the proceeds go to the Wounded Warriors Project and K9's for warriors. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.. and the show begins at 7 p.m. All tickets are $12 and may be ordered in advance by calling 904-824-8874 or at the door as long as seating is available.
